Anatomy-Related Question

Would you mind putting my and the folks down at cillian_murphy's minds at rest? In the movie Red Eye.... Actually, this is a movie spoiler:

Anyway, at the end of the movie, Jackson Rippner gets shot in the chest. It's around this area:

I tried to screencap it, but I couldn't figure it out, so it might not be exactly there. I was wondering if there's any possible way to live through a shot there. When I first saw the movie, I thought he'd just been incapacitated, because he just looked defeated and royally pissed, not dead. 'Cause y'know how in movies when the bad guy dies they'll have him tense up and then relax, or just drop dead, while the good guy lasts a little longer so he can say his final words. So I figured some people in here might be familiar enough with anatomy to tell me for sure. If it helps, the cops show up right after he gets shot, so he was probably taken to the hospital immediately.

Also, what are the long-term affects of getting a ballpoint pen stabbed into your windpipe?
